The main WCD film is in the edit. For now — the beginning of the story, from the person who started it.

The mission of this flash mob is to beat loneliness and help people get past their fears. If you share our mission — join in and tell your friends and the people around you, so there are more of us and fewer lonely people.
Let’s beat loneliness together!

The hard part isn’t saying hello.
It’s knowing who wants to hear it.

it all fits in three steps

How to take part

step 1

Find your color

Take a short test: how you’d act in 10 everyday situations. At the end you get one of four colors that reflects the way you meet people.

step 2

Wear it on November 21 — and go out

The simplest way is a bracelet or a ribbon in your color. Want to invent something bolder — it’s all in your hands. Just make it visible: on your wrist, your bag, or your jacket.

step 3

Say hello

You see the color — that person is open to meeting someone new. Walk up without fear and say hi. Ideally to your matching color, but if you really want to — any color will do.

four colors — four kinds of hello

Which one is yours?

Every color has an opposite — the hello that starts a conversation most easily. The test will show your color pair and explain why.

why this matters

Sound familiar?

You wanted to walk over, but were afraid to intrude.
You sat alone in a coffee shop and would have loved some conversation.
You moved to a new city and don’t know anyone yet.
You’re tired of guessing who’s open to meeting someone new.

On November 21, there’s no more guessing.

Maybe there’s someone you’ve long wanted to meet, but you never knew whether it would be welcome. On this day you won’t have to wonder: a ribbon on the wrist is permission for the first hello — yours to give, and yours to get.

Valery — the man behind the idea

How the idea was born

“Every one of us has been lonely at some point — or is lonely right now. Loneliness left a serious mark on me too. Everyone has a mission; I chose the fight against loneliness.

I built an app that 18 million people use to meet each other, but it’s only a tool — it doesn’t solve the problem completely. So I thought: what if people weren’t afraid to meet each other offline? Everything would get so much simpler.

In every part of life, what stands between us and happiness is fear.

What if there were a day when no one was afraid to say hello, no one was afraid of looking odd — and everyone knew the other person wouldn’t turn them away?

That’s how I came up with WCD — the day we outsmart our fears. I love ambitious goals, and I’m ready to spend my life fighting loneliness. If you’ve felt loneliness too and want to be part of a huge worldwide flash mob — take the test, share it with people you know, and let’s make the coolest, kindest flash mob in history together.”

The date is no accident: since 1973, November 21 has been World Hello Day — a day when tradition says you should greet ten people. We’re giving a fifty-year-old tradition the one thing it was missing: a way to see which of those ten is actually waiting for your hello.
